Shutter Island (2010)

Director: Martin Scorcese
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams
Certificate: 15
Genre: Thriller
Awards: None

Shutter island starts with two US marshals arriving on an island with a facility that holds the criminally insane. The next two hours are full of suspense and mystery leading to a brilliant and awesome ending.  Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Ruffalo) are looking for an escaped patient. The strange thing is she escaped from a room locked from the outside. As the Marshals start to question the staff, they realise all is not what it seems.

Shutter Island is a great atmospheric film. It has a creepy feeling from the beginning and doesn't let up. DiCaprio, Ruffalo and Kingsley show some fine acting and the story keeps you guessing.

I was told the ending of this film but I was still surprised at how it turned out. This is definitely one to watch.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Director: Billy Wilder
Starring: Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Marilyn Monroe
Certificate: PG
Genre: Comedy
Awards: Best costumes

Some Like It Hot follows two musicians who accidentally walk into a massacre by a gang. With the gang wanting them silenced, they escape with a female band. The catch is they have to disguise themselves as women to get in the band. There they meet the singer Sugar Kane Kowalczyk (Monroe). They fall for her and try different ways to get to know her. Meanwhile, the gangsters seem to be going to the same place as them for a meeting...

Some Like It Hot is a funny and heart warming film. The two musicians are witty and crazy enough for the humour to work. This is a classic that still stands tall today.

Director: John Sturges
Starring: Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn, Horst Buchholz
Certificate: U
Genre: Western
Awards: none

The Magnificent Seven is a western version of the samurai film Seven Samurai. Seven of the best killers sign up to protect a small village from a gang of mexican bandits.

The film is a brilliant example of how to make all your characters stand out and seem different to each other. This makes you care more about what is going to happen to them. The shootouts are great and you can see when an important character dies - which doesn't happen in every film. The music - although not as good as the spaghetti western's - is very memorable and perfect for this film. The cast are all exceptional in their own ways. This is a really good ensemble film.

Memento (2000)

Director: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Guy Pearce, Carry-Ann Moss, Joe Pantoliano
Certificate: 15
Genre: Thriller, drama
Awards: None

Memento was the film that put Christopher Nolan on the map and it's obvious why. The film is shown completely backwards - The end scene to the beginning- and follows Leonard Shelby (Pearce), a man with  short term memory loss, who is trying to track down the people who killed his wife and gave him his condition. On his way to revenge, he meets a number of characters who he is not sure he can trust.

The unique way the story is told really creates this film. You don't know what is going on until right at the very end. This is definitely a film you have to concentrate on. Guy Pearce is a brilliant amnesiac who's story is so sad you can't help but root for him. Although film is incredibly clever, I feel that it is still weak compared to Nolan's other stories such as The Prestige and Inception.

Director: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holme, Yaphet Kotto
Certificate: 15
Genre: Horror, Sci Fi
Awards: Best Effects

As Prometheus is coming out soon, this week I am going to review the first two alien films starting with the classic Alien...

The classic horror in space has not lost any of it's touch over the past three decades and will still make you gasp and jump. Alien takes place in space where a mining ship pick up a distress signal on an unexplored planet. The ships crew go in search for the lifeforms in need of help and accidentally let an Alien into their ship.  The crew start to be picked off one by one as they try to kill it.

Alien is a masterpiece of horror and Science Fiction. The xenomorph (the Alien) is now one of the most iconic creatures of film industry, the actors are brilliant as the range of characters and the effects are gruesomely awesome (The chestburster is still one of my favourite scenes in a film). The fact that we wait such a long time for something to happen only increases the terror. You feel like one of the characters; waiting for the alien to strike at his next victim. This is a must see film for absolutely anyone who knows what a good film is.

'Grimm' and 'Once Upon a Time' Renewed for 2nd Season

It's official news. ABC's successful fairytale romance drama, Once Upon a Time, has been renewed for a second season. In case you haven't seen the ending, it left little doubt that magic hasn't totally disappeared in Storybrooke.

“We have some ideas for Season 2,” One element of a second season will be the addition of the Little Mermaid character of Ariel, who was alluded to on the show a few weeks ago. “It’s been challenging to pull off (this show) every week because we’re trying to balance two worlds and thematically link them,” said Kitsis, who co-created the show with Adam Horowitz. “We were never interested in just retelling the old (fairy) tales. Kitsis also revealed that all Once Upon A Time cast members were the producers’ first choice for the roles. “Everyone that we asked (to be on the show) said yes.”

Meanwhile, NBC also renewed its fairy tale crime drama, Grimm for a second season. Great news for both shows. I'm expecting Fall 2012 premiere dates. Stay tuned for more updates.

And here is the rest of it.

A quick blog round-up of notable posts, Victorian related or otherwise, from other bloggers in recent weeks:

Le Professeur Gothique- The dear professor not only has achieved her BatFit Challenge of 40 by 40 (w00t!), but she also writes an intriguing and well-researched academically-inspired blog post about the image of the "femme fatale" which developed during the Fin-De-Siècle due to misunderstandigns abut sexuality and the changing class structure and gender roles of women.

The Neo-Victorian Parlour- Blogmistress Ms. Lou shares her researches on Victorian bicycles.  And, from last month, an excellent post on Victorian Picnic Etiquette.

Mutterings from the Oubliette- A.W. Exley spent the entire month of April creating a Steampunk Alphabet- 26 posts for each letter.  My favorites are N is for Neverwas Haul, S is for Sidesaddle, and Z is for Zeppelin.

The Virtual Victorian writes a short biographical post on Victorian artist, author, and poet Edward Lear.

And finally, not really Victorian related, but VictorianKitty over at Sophistique Noir announces the return of Red & Black Week, as well shares her three outfits worn to job interviews (which she nailed, also completing her own BatFit Challenge! w00t again!)
  • Outfit 1
  • Outfit 2
  • Outfit 3

As an added bonus, a photo of a puppy:
Rosie, my part-time boss's golden retriever at 10 weeks of age.

I just realized that I had never given a complete overview of the outfits I wore to the Steampunk Empire Symposium at the end of April.  For your viewing pleasure I will feature my three main outfits.
Day 1-Steampunk Safari Adventuress with the clockwork guns and holsters I made:

Photo by Nim Derringer.  Photo used with permission.

And me with Steampunk Boba Fett.  Most people who come in contact with him, both male and female, seem to develop crushes on him.  I am no exception.  He has the most addictive and flirty personality.  I love you Steampunk Boba Fett!

Day 2- Near-sighted Red Lady (a.k.a. the Big Bustle Butt Outfit.)  I think I made the bustle too ample, which worked perfectly for my "performance" of "Baby Got Brass" but otherwise still doesn't look right.

My friend Narla Thotep lent me the flower and, later on, the top hat.  As mentioned previously I purchased the glasses and the purse to go with this outfit.

The following photo is my absolute favorite- so candid and yet getting such a good view of my face at the same time:

There was an outfit for the masquerade Ball on the evening of the second day, but I forgot to take a photo of it.
Day 3- Elegant Aristocrat (featuring this Recollections ensemble):

vsf wargame- official version

The year is 1878. The mad scientist Dr. Alset hatched a cunning plan to take over London using vile automatons, but was foiled at the last moment by new consulting detective Sherlock Holmes. The inventor has since fled England and taken up residence with Cacshwayo, King of the Zulus, in Zululand. Agents of the Queen have instructed Lord Kelmsford to come up with a reason to invade Zululand and bring the doctor to justice. British forces have advanced through Zululand, finally reaching the tribal capital. As Kelmsford, the British army, and a handful of special agents approach, the Zulu nation pours forth the pride of its warriors to maintain their sovereignty. But Dr. Alset has a few steam-powered surprises of his own in store for his British adversaries...
Or so the description of the VSF wargame Scott put on for the Steel City Steam Society on Sunday went.
For those of you who remember my post about the VSF tabletop wargame Scott and I had demo'ed back in March at Legions Hobbies and Games in Wexford, our game on Sunday was the same exact scenario, meant to be played by members of the SCSS.  Unfortunately everyone declined due to other commitments except myself and one other person.
But two players, and steampunkers at that, were enough.  Scott ran the game and Jack and I, the gamers, asked questions and moved pieces around the table. This time I played the Zulus while Jack took the Brits and their allies.
It was a hot day in May, but I decided to dress appropriately for the occasion as a gun-slinging Wild West steampunk adventuress.  The fan was completely necessary- despite Legions being located in the basement of a shopping complex, it was still rather muggy down there.  Jack didn't want his photo taken.

The Brits:

The Zulus:

Jack had never wargamed before but had played various card and tabletop games before, so he picked up on what to do very quickly.  Scott is an excellent GM for running these games, and helped instruct both of us when we forgot the rules or didn't know whether a move was possible/legal/practical or not.
In the end, though, we had to leave early without determining a winner.  I thought the Brits were going to win, as they wiped out a great deal of my Zulu warriors by forming up in a tight line on the left flank.  But on their right flank (my left) they lost several native units, their cavalry, and had to face the slowly approaching dreadnought, which I did not manage to get into the game as it was unable to cross the river in time.  But it was loads of fun, and Scott is the sweetest for putting on the game.
Next option might be a Wild West gaming scenario.

The photos from the Zulu/Brit game have been posted below.  It looks as if Scott took some while I was busy playing, as I don't recall him ever handling my camera.  And he even managed to get a sneak shot of Jack!

victorian scandal: the original "mrs. robinson"

Kate Summerscale, author of The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective, has come out with yet another book about scandal in the Victorian middle classes and the public's reactions, as well as gender inequality.  The subject of this sordid tale: Mrs. Isabella Robinson, the woman who dared to lust after another man within the pages of her own diary.

The Edinburgh Evening News wrote an overview of the new book in the article "How Victorian mother rocked Edinburgh with divorce scandal," which summarizes the tale of the disgraced Isabella.

Living in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the 1850s, the wife and mother of two lived a lonely, unfulfilled existence as an upper middle class Victorian woman.  One night she met a man who would change her life for the worse in the Victorian mindset:

[Isabella Robinson] was introduced to Lady Drysdale’s daughter Mary and her husband of three years Edward Lane, a medical student ten years younger than Isabella and who, she wrote in her diary later was “fascinating”.

Edward Lane was 27, Canadian-born and educated in Edinburgh. A lawyer, he was busy training for a new career in medicine. He was, wrote Isabella, “handsome, lively and good humoured”. And that might well have been that. But something had stirred deep within this lonely young mother.

Her husband Henry, she complained in her diary, was often away on business, yet even when he did come home she felt alone and unfulfilled. He was, she wrote, an “uncongenial partner”, “uneducated, narrow-minded, harsh tempered, selfish, proud”. Not only that, but she later discovered he also had a mistress and two illegitimate daughters.

Edward Lane was dashing, young, clever and with his interesting Canadian background, no doubt represented all she did not have.

She noted how she’d chat to Edward about all the things she loved: poetry and philosophy.

Edward became Dr Lane, a pioneer homeopath and proprietor of a hydropathy establishment in Surrey. And Isabella, of course, became a visitor.
While there is not any clear evidence of an affair, Isabella left a record of what was considered to be adulterous behavior when she recorded in the pages of her diary her passion for Dr. Lane, including descriptions "of trysts and stolen kisses, of secretive meetings and lust."
When Isabella fell sick for a spell in 1858, her husband, Henry, fell upon her diary.  Scandalized by his wife's  written yearning for another man, he filed for divorce.
He was the 11th British citizen to do so in the new Court for Divorce and Matrimonial cases in London.
“When the new Court for Divorce and Matrimonial cases opened in London in 1858, it was the first time divorce had been made affordable to the middle classes of England,” explains Summerscale who researched Isabella’s diaries for her book.

“Until then, only a couple of divorces were granted a year to the very rich because before then they required a special private act of parliament for dissolution of marriage.

“The new law was designed to make divorce fairer, more transparent and rational and yet it did preserve a double standard for men and women,” she adds.

“The husband was suing for divorce on grounds of his wife’s adultery. But he was an adulterer, he had a mistress and two illegitimate daughters as I discovered when I read Mrs Robinson’s private correspondence. But this was never mentioned in court.”
Dr. Lane escaped reproach because there was no suggestion in his own papers to support any claims of an adulterous relationship with Mrs. Robinson.  His colleagues rallied to his side.
For Isabella, however, her name was dragged through the mud, her diaries held up as the disturbed fantasies of an insane woman- for what normal woman would want to lust after a man who was not her husband?
“Medical manuals at the time associated strong female sexual desire with insanity,” explains Summerscale. “When this case came to trial, Isabella Robinson’s lawyers argued that the diary in which she apparently recorded her adulterous affair was itself a symptom of disease and that the sexual scenes she had written had never really happened but were hallucinations of an erotomanic imagination.”
As a result of the assumed "insanity" of Mrs. Robinson as shown through the pages of her lasciviousness diary, the courts found no grounds for divorce.  No physical adultery had been committed, they determined.
It was only until 1864, when Isabella was caught with her children's young French tutor in two hotels, was Henry Robinson finally able to divorce his wife.
I will be on the lookout for this book, as Kate Summerscale does excellent research on obscure aspects of the Victorian era.  Not only does she focus on the protagonist of this true story, but she also researches the public's mindset through the literature, newspaper articles, correspondences, and other primary sources of the day that might give light on what the majority of the Victorian middle class was thinking in regard to divorce and sex at the time.

Review: Witch Hunter Robin (2002)

Witch Hunter Robin (2002) is a Japanese supernatural anime set in contemporary Japan. The plot revolves around witchcraft and mystery. It contains 26 episodes, and is available to buy on DVD.

Robin Sena, a 15-year-old female craft user, arrives from Italy to work for an underground global organization named STN Japan Division (STN-J) as a replacement for one of STN-J's witch hunters who was recently killed. Solomon headquarters tries to capture the witches alive in order to learn why and how they became witches in the first place. Witches are individuals with special powers like telekinesis, mind control, and extrasensory perception. It fights witchcraft by using a database of witches, which includes those who have obtained the power through genetics and others who carry the gene (called "seeds"). It also uses witch hunters to arrest or eliminate them should their powers "awaken".

During her mission, Robin begins unravelling the secrets of both the witches and STN-J. What is the fabled item that holds the secrets of the craft? As the series goes on, Robin grows increasingly uncomfortable with her role in hunting and capturing other witches. She begins to question the treatment they receive while incarcerated in the mysterious "Factory." She is also uncertain about her origins, and the truth may reveal the meaning behind the secrets of the craft.

Although this anime series came out a decade ago, it still feels fresh and original. There was no one to root for because both sides seemed to engage in devious behavior. As one of the top-ranked anime in 2002, I can understand now why critics highly recommend the show. There is little romance and comedy, but the plot does pick up quickly to avoid dull moments.

There is also a hint of romance at the end when Amon decides to stay by Robin's side when the Factory collapses. Rumors said they either died in the destruction or fled the scene undetected for their own safety. Amon said that if Robin loses control over her burgeoning powers, he will have the duty to destroy her. Overall, this anime contains many philosophical elements; serious fans would reap the most benefits from learning the secrets and truth behind Robin's existence.

Review: Seto no Hanayome (2007)

To contact us Click HERE

Seto no Hanayome ~My Bride Is a Mermaid~ (2007) is a Japanese comedy anime about mermaids. It contains 26 episodes. It also contains a two-episode sequel (2008-2009) in the form of an original animation video (OAV). It is based on the manga by Kimura Tahiko.

During his summer vacation at Seto Bay, a young teenage boy, named Nagasumi Michishio, enters the water for a swim. Fortunately, he is saved from drowning by a mermaid. Later, he tells the rest of the family about the mermaid. Soon, a young girl named Sun Seto, appears at his home and begs Nagumi to mary her.

Under mermaid law, either the mermaid whose identity was revealed or the human who saw the mermaid must be executed. She is followed by two large thugs and they take both Nagumi and his parents to Sun's home under the sea. It appears that Sun's parents are mob bosses. Nagasumi is left with the choice of either death or marrying Sun. In an attempt to save both of their lives, Sun's family reluctantly agree to the marriage.

Sun's father, Gzabur, is enraged about his daughter's sudden marriage. In fact, some members of the mob are determined to bring an end to their relationship. Between Sun's father constant attempts on Nagasumi's life and adversaries who want to torment him at school, Nagumi has a hard time transitioning into his eccentric married lifestyle.

This is a cute mermaid romance comedy. I congratulate the producers for taking on this project. Few mermaid shows currently exist, and Seto no Hanayome won't disappoint viewers. The plot is funny, wild and crazy. You wonder how does Nagumi survive and keep his sanity! The artists also took cues from popular classic films; some of the mob bosses resemble yakuza gangsters and cult figures such as the Terminator. The plot is surprisingly consistent for its length, and the violence and facial expressions are exaggerated for comic relief. While it is hardly epic (some scenes are flat-out idiotic and thoughtless), I highly recommend it for those occasions when you need mild humor to brighten up your day.

Review: One Foot in the Grave (Night Huntress #2)

"You can run form the grave, but you can't hide..."

One Foot in the Grave, by Jeaniene Frost, is the second novel in the Night Huntress series. Half-vampire Catherine "Cat" Crawfield works as a Special Agent for the federal government to depose rogue vampires and other supernatural beings. It has been five years since she has last seen Bones, her former vampire lover. She uses everything her former lover taught her in her professional role. With a new identity and new friends, her mother is under the best protection and Cat leads her own military team in expeditions. It was the best deal given her predicament in the previous novel. Nevertheless, her new life still feels empty.

When Cat finds herself the target of a failed assassination attempt, she must turn to the man she left behind. Her survival depends on teaming up with Bones again. No matter how much she tries to act professional, she realizes that her passion and desire for Bones grows stronger than ever. Furthermore, she may finally meet the man who is responsible for her existence. With this piece of news, there's no turning back for her, or her dearest friends may become his next targets.

Frost continues to impress me with her story-writing skills. I read this novel in three days; that's how much I enjoyed this novel. She also amps the magic with erotic sexual scenes that will make you swoon with passion. Vampire politics and hierarchies are explored in greater detail. Finally, the mysteries behind Cat's father and Bones' master are also revealed. How will Cat react in both situations?

Many years (five to be exact) have passed between the two novels. Now 27-28 years old, Cat is a mature professional woman who pursues her government job very seriously. Although she sacrificed the love of her life with this decision, she befriends new people and lives a stable life for once. Although she tries to date a human, a twist of fate occurs when Bones reappears in her life in the most surprising way. Surprised by his appearance, Cat almost loses her composure and feels relieved to be reunited with him again. With a bounty on her head, she needs his guidance and protection to live another day.

Stay tuned for the next novel in the Night Huntress series, At Grave's End.
